Customers

A customer in Velocity is someone who buys products or services from your business. Each customer is mapped one-to-one with a customer in your BigCommerce store. Changes made on either platform are synced between the two.

Info

Customers created in BigCommerce are automatically imported into Velocity. Customers created in Velocity are automatically exported to BigCommerce.

Customers do not have access to Velocity. Velocity allows you to easily manage your customers.

All customers have a unique customer number or "ID". This number is displayed next to customer names on the list and detail pages.

Customer List

The customer list page allows you to create, edit, view, and manage your customers. You can search, filter, sort, export and create customers with the controls at the top of the page.

Search for any of the following fields:

  • first name
  • last name
  • email address
  • customer number
  • company name
  • phone number
  • custom field values (only fields with list icons)

Customer Management

Create a Customer

Create new customers with the New customer button at the top of the page. The customer creation form allows you to add customer information, select groups, apply labels, and fill out custom fields if they have been configured.

The Send account creation email checkbox controls whether the new customer receives an email about their account creation. If no password is supplied, one will be generated automatically for them.

Edit a Customer

Customer information can be edited and updated from the list page context menu or from the customer detail page. Quickly jump to any section via the navigation options on the left side of the page.

Delete a Customer

Customers can either be deleted from the context menu Edit modal or directly from BigCommerce. When a customer is deleted:

  • The customer will no longer be able to sign in to the store or place new orders
  • Orders already placed by the customer will not be deleted
  • The email address associated with the customer will no longer be usable by any future customers
  • You will not be able to undo this action

Customer Groups

You can separate and sort customers using the customer group feature. Customer groups allow you to organize your customers, set custom pricing, and restrict access to specific products or categories.

Tip

Customer groups are a convenient way to set custom pricing and manage product visibility for your customers.

Customer groups can be created from the BigCommerce dashboard. Refer to the BigCommerce documentation for help with this process. The group name is not visible to your customers on the storefront, but is visible to users in Velocity. You can also set category, product, and store-wide discounts for your customer groups within BigCommerce.

Customers can be added to and removed from groups in Velocity from either the Edit modal or the customer detail page.

Customer Labels

Customer labels are simple tags within Velocity that you can use to categorize customers. Unlike customer groups, labels are created on the Velocity settings > customer settings page, under the customer labels section and do not impact the customer on the storefront. Labels are not visible to customers and should be used for simple tagging, organizing and filtering purposes.

Customer Approval

You can set customer approval in Velocity by selecting a default on the customer settings page, manually setting the customer to approved during customer creation, or managing an existing customer's approval from the customer details page.

  • Default Customer Approval — There are two ways to set a new customer's status to Approved with both being located within the Velocity Settings under the Customer Settings page. Towards the bottom of the page, there are two checkboxes that enable Storefront Customer Approval and Velocity Customer Approval. Storefront Approval sets customers who are created in BigCommerce to automatic approval. Velocity Approval on the other hand sets customers who are created in Velocity to automatic approval

  • Manual Approval — During the customer creation process, you can select the "This customer is approved" checkbox to approve the customer

  • Existing Customer Approval — Navigate to the customer details page and select the Actions context menu. After, select Change Approval... which will then open a UI with a "This customer is approved" checkbox. Optionally, you can set an expiration date as well that will remove the approved status from that customer after that date

Approved customers are shown with a verified badge next to their name on the Customers page.

Customer Addresses

Customer addresses can be managed from the address book on the customer detail page. You can create, edit, and delete addresses. Changes made here will be synced with BigCommerce and changes your customer makes in BigCommerce will be synced with this page.

Add an Address

The Add address button brings up a modal where you can enter a new address. By default this form auto-populates with some of the customer's existing information.

There are two checkboxes at the bottom of the modal to optionally flag an address as a default billing address and/or a default shipping address. If either box is checked, the new respective address will be selected automatically for this customer at checkout.

Edit an Address

Once created, you can edit an address via the pencil icon in the top right corner of an address card.

Delete an Address

To delete a customer address, select the pencil icon and look for the Delete button.

Customer Attachments

Attachments allow you to save arbitrary files to a customer's profile. All file types are accepted with a maximum file size of 1GB per file.

Tip

Important documents of any kind can be uploaded and saved to customer profiles in Velocity.

Attachments are visible to Velocity users only. Customers cannot see attachments.

View, edit, and delete attachments with the information icon button. Download attachments with the file icon button.

Customer Payment Methods

Overview

Customer payment methods can be securely saved for faster and more convenient usage. Any payment methods added for a customer through Velocity will be synced with BigCommerce and any payment method added by the customer on the storefront will be synced with Velocity.

Add a Payment Method

The Add payment method button allows you to securely add customer cards and bank accounts.

Info

Bank accounts can only be used on the one-time payments page. They cannot be used to pay for an order at checkout.

When adding a customer's bank account, a form will open where you can enter a customer's bank details. Select Enter bank details manually instead at the bottom of the form. Once added, customer bank accounts may not immediately appear in their list of payment methods.

Edit a Payment Method

Existing payment methods can be annotated and/or deleted via the Edit button. Payment method notes are only visible within Velocity and cannot be seen by the customer. The notes field can be useful for flexibly adding context to payment methods.
